Velez Unseats Belleville Mayor Melham After Weeks Of Controversy
Frank Velez declared victory in Belleville’s mayoral race Tuesday night, May 12, after defeating incumbent Mayor Michael Melham in the township’s nonpartisan municipal election.
The 24-year-old received 3,255 votes, 59.47%, compared to Melham’s 2,218 votes, 40.53%, according to unofficial election results posted Wednesday afternoon, May 13.
Melham, who is also the deputy coordinator of the Office of Emergency Management, received backlash from the community over his handling of the massive warehouse fire that closed schools.

6,500 Without Power After Fierce Windstorm Batters Hudson Valley
Thousands of Hudson Valley residents remained without power after a powerful windstorm swept through the region Friday afternoon and night, Oct. 31, 2025, according to Central Hudson.
As of 8:45 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, approximately 6,500 customers were still without service, with Ulster County reporting 3,505 outages, Greene County 1,685, Dutchess County 479, and Sullivan County 269, utility officials said.

A motorcyclist remains on the lam after fleeing from police in Jackson last month, authorities announced Wednesday, Sept. 17.
On Wednesday, Aug. 27 at 11:34 a.m., an officer observed a motorcycle traveling on Frank Applegate Road, going 52 mph, 12 miles over the posted speed limit of 40 mph, Jackson Township Police said.
The officer walked into the operator's lane of travel while raising his hand signaling the motorcyclist to stop and pull over to the left side of the road, police said.

Long Island Teen Located After Four Months; Another 15-Year-Old With Same Name Still Missing
A Long Island teen who vanished in East Garden City in May has been found safe, Nassau County Police announced on Friday, Sept. 12.
Julian Carbajal, 15, was last seen around 9 a.m. on Wednesday, May 14, shortly after 14-year-old Gabriella Panameno-Marinero went missing in Uniondale, according to police.
Carbajal is 5-foot-6 and 160 pounds, with brown curly hair and blue eyes. He had last been seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black sweatpants, and white sneakers, detectives said.
Authorities confirmed he was located safely after being missing for nearly four months.
