Missing Person Among 2 Wrong-Way Drivers Stopped On Southern State Parkway In Islip, Police Say
A missing person has been found after State Police on Long Island responded to not one, but two separate wrong-way drivers on the Southern State Parkway in just as many days. Troopers were first called at around 9:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, with reports of a vehicle traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of the highway in the town of Islip, near exit 42, according to State Police. Former Boston Red Sox pitcher Anthony Varvaro died in a wrong-way 9/11 crash on the New Jersey Turnpike, authorities said. Varvaro, a 37-year-old married father of four who became a Port Authority police officer, died in the head-on collision near Exit 14C, early on Sunday, Sept. 11, they said. A Bergen County man was identified by authorities as one of the two people killed in a wrong-way, head-on crash overnight in New York. George Gonzalez, 68, of Dumont, was heading north in the southbound lanes of I-87 in a 2017 Toyota RAV4, when he drove into a 2022 Nissan Altima around 1 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6 in Tuxedo, New York State Police said.
