Long-Serving Firefighter, Teacher From Somers Dies A firefighter and teacher from Northern Westchester who served his department for more than 50 years has died.  Somers resident Fred Whipple, who served the Somers Volunteer Fire Department for 58 years, died on Sunday, March 19, the department announced.  Since joining the department in 1965, Whipple became known by many for his great personality and he eventually became the "true senior man" at the firehouse, lending his knowledge and experience to many younger members, according to the fire department.
